The past few years have seen an incredible series of discoveries revealing the functional complexity of the microbial immune system. We now understand that microbes encode over 100 distinct anti-phage defense systems and that human cells and bacteria use shared systems and principles to defend against viral infection. The purpose of the 2024 Symposium on the Immune System of Bacteria is to bring together the emerging community of researchers studying bacterial immunity. Topics to be covered include new principles and mechanisms of defense systems, evolution and spread of antiviral immunity, defense island biology and mechanisms of viral evasion from host immunity.

The 2024 meeting will include invited talks, talks selected from submitted abstracts, and two poster sessions. About half of the talks in the meeting will be selected from submitted abstracts.
